Ann Marie Gawel

Research: Conservation and ecology in Micronesia. Dr. Gawel is part of the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellows Program through the Society for Conservation Biology. She is pictured here with Palau conservation staff, biologists, and rangers, and snail enthusiasts visiting Palau from Guam. As part of Ann Marie's fellowship, she is focused on the conservation of Mariana Islands partulid land snails.

Research:
Body size evolution in Pacific island land snails. I'm particularly interested in how phylogenetic history, abiotic pressures like microclimate and nutrient availability, and immigrant selection impact land snail body size. Comparing body sizes between snails of very different shapes has motivated me to develop new methods for measuring shell size. Links to papers and presentations:
